Dangerous Foods for Your Dog
Many foods that humans digest easily can make your pet very uncomfortable, even hurt them. From WikiHow here is a list. Check out their website for more information.
Chocolate
- Milder reactions: vomiting, diarrhoea, excess thirst, excess urination, hyper activity.
- Severe reaction: an abnormal heartbeat, death.
Caffeine/Coffee
- Same reactions as chocolate.
Alcohol
- Milder: vomiting, diarrhoea
- Severe: uneven breathing, abnormal blood activity, lack of coordination, coma, death
Onions, garlic, chives in all forms including cooked
- Milder: Stomach and bowel irritation
- Severe: Large amounts can damage red blood cells.
Macadamia nuts and walnuts in all forms including baking
- Milder: panting, weakness
- Severe: tremors, swollen limbs
Grapes and Raisins
- Severe: Can cause kidney failure.
Avocado
- Milder: vomiting, diarrhoea
- Severe: heart congestion
Raw yeast dough
- Milder:Keeps raising in stomach causing bloating, pain
- Severe: rupture of stomach and/or intestines
Raw meat
- Severe; E-Coli and Salmonella symptoms. As you would for humans handle with same care.
Raw eggs
- Mild: Skin and coat problems.
Milk
- Mild: digestive upsets
Xylitol: a sweetener in gums, candy, toothpaste, baking
- Serious: can quickly cause liver failure. Beginning symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, lack of coordination.
Corn on the cob
- Severe: Blockage of digestive track. Can require surgical removal.
Bones
- Severe: choking, punctured gastrointestinal tract. Marrow bones are the only reasonably safe ones for chewing.
Cooked breads
- Severe: can contribute to diabetes. Give only in small amounts.
Tomatoes, tomato plants
- Mild: tremors
- Severe: heart arrhythmias.
Excessive Salt
- Severe: kidney problems.
Medications
- Always check with a vet before giving any human medication. Many are lethal to pets
This is not an exhaustive list believe it or not. Dogs have a different metabolism and digestive system so it is wise to investigate before assuming anything. Bananas, by the way, are okay in moderate amounts.
